EL CENTRO – The Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce Telmate as the new Inmate Telecommunications provider for the Imperial County Sheriff’s Jail. Telmate brings a wide variety of products and solutions for inmates, friends, and family; Inmate phones, Video Visitation, Messages/Photo sharing, Deposit options, Education, and Paperless grievances and requests.

Monday the 20th marked the first day going live with the new system from Telmate. Video Visitation has been introduced to the jails along with its many benefits: reduction of staff time, increased safety and security, reduction of contraband, elimination of hidden/shielded communication, and face to face unprotected communication, easily monitored by staff at any time. Video visitation offers both onsite video visits and remote visits over the internet via web browser.

Telmate has also installed its tablet devices in the Sheriff’s Office Correctional Facilities and serves inmates through a secured wireless service and detention-safe operating system. This new technology includes a number of features that benefit both the Inmates and Correctional Staff-at no cost to taxpayers. Access to paperless requests and grievances and monitored messaging with friends and family are currently offered on tablets. In the weeks to come, the Sheriff’s Office intends to offer self-improvement, skill training, and educational applications through the tablets to transform “wasted time” into “productive time” for inmates.

AUGUST HERO: MIKE RACZKOWSKI

Montana IT Hero Keeps Montana DOC Up and Running

August 10, 2015 – HELENA, MT – Mike Raczkowski is all about supporting what he calls, “the real heroes” of corrections. The IT Communications Manager for the Montana Department of Corrections (MDOC) was named Telmate’s August Hero of the Month. “I support those that put themselves in harm’s way inside the prison walls and those that supervise parolees in the community,” he said.

Raczkowski (aka “Raz”), who works from the central office in Helena, brought an IT career in the private sector to the IT department at MDOC over 19 years ago. According to Raz, he chose the profession because he can communicate (well) with both computers and human beings.

As IT Communications Manager, Raz helps facility staff do the hard work of corrections inside the prison walls by providing the systems necessary to do their jobs.  Mike is proud of the fact that he was a part of the projects that provided network connectivity and distributed computers to the 34 separate facilities and offices MDOC has across the geographically large state.

In his current role Raz manages the department’s Public Safety Radio system along with the telephone System and videoconferencing services in all MDOC locations.  He also represents his IT Division on strategic sourcing projects in partnership with his CIO, John Daugherty.

Part of MDOC’s mission is to provide positive change in offender behavior, and reintegrate offenders back into the community. “Having affordable connectivity for telephone calls to their family and friends through the Telmate system definitely makes a difference in reintegrating them into society when they’re released,” said Raczkowski. “Almost everybody gets out eventually and the more they communicate with their family and other members of their community, the better equipped they are to reenter society successfully.”

MDOC has five locations in the state that Telmate provides service for, which represent all the secure facilities that the department runs directly. “We’ve been a satisfied customer ever since contracting with Telmate in 2010,” he said, “and Telmate has done an great job with everything.  When problems come up, including customer  service resolution and connectivity issues, Telmate gets them handled promptly.”

Raz is an avid fly fisherman who also hunts, hikes and camps in his spare time.  “I’m like every other guy I know in Montana,” he confessed.  Raz says he’s is also a part of a ministry known as Compassion Tanzania and has traveled to Africa three times to provide the people there with clean water and religious education.

According to Chief Marketing Officer, Jeff Hansen, Telmate’s Hero Program tells stories from the perspective of the everyday hero. “As a company, Telmate represents empowerment, trust and technology,” he said, “and this program shows how we support these heroes that make a difference in the lives of inmate and families, whether it’s outside or inside the facility.”

Every month, Telmate receives nominations in recognition of heroes just like Raczkowski, who use the company’s technology, day in and day out. Telmate recognizes these heroes by selecting and honoring one Hero of the Month for their dedication and leadership.

Telmate Cares Awards Scholarship to Law Enforcement Club at ACA 145th Congress of Correction

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (PRWEB) August 13, 2015 – On August 16, during the American Correctional Association’s 145th Congress of Correction, Telmate will award Indiana-based law enforcement Untouchables Motorcycle Club (UMC) a $5,000 scholarship as part of the company’s Telmate Fallen Heroes Fund, a part of the Telmate Cares program. The fund provides financial assistance to law enforcement organizations like UMC in support of fallen officers or families of law enforcement officers in need, by awarding a monetary gift.

“We have the great honor of working with corrections and law enforcement on a day to day basis,” said Telmate Chief Marketing Officer, Jeff Hansen, “and we are so honored to do what we can to support law enforcement organizations like UMC.”

UMC was originally created in 2000 to benefit the widows and children of fallen police officers or families of officers in need. If no officer is killed in the state of Indiana, UMC still conducts fundraising for a worthy recipient, most likely a family member of a living police officer, who is in need of help. This month, UMC selected to award Telmate’s gift to Crown Point police officer Mike Brazil as his family incurs overwhelming medical expenses for their daughter, Emberly Brazil who suffers from Rett Syndrome. A rare genetic neurological disorder, Rett Syndrome attacks the nervous system resulting in loss of language and motor skills. Emberly’s story stole the hearts of the Telmate scholarship committee and she was immediately chosen as the first scholarship recipient.

Children like young Emberly, who are suffering from Rett Syndrome, endure a lifetime of expensive treatments, therapies and medications to complete normal daily activities that we sometimes take for granted — like eating and dressing. “The emotional and financial impact of this disorder can be crippling, said Todd Cliborne, President and Co-founder of UMC. “But we hope to relieve some of that financial burden with Telmate’s gift.”

On the job: Jamie Harris, Lake County Sheriff’s Intelligence Unit

CROWN POINT | There’s a good chance Sgt. Jamie Harris could track down any criminal suspect in Lake County.

While officers and detectives are on the street investigating crimes, a detail such as a suspect’s nickname can be used by Harris to help detectives zero in on the suspect and his or her connections.

“One piece of information spiderwebs into days of work,” Harris said.

He has led the one-person intelligence unit for the Lake County sheriff’s department since December 2013. His office is located down a gritty hallway housing the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit, Indiana State Excise Police and the sheriff’s department gang and narcotics units.

Harris’ work in gathering intelligence dates back to his time in the U.S. Army.

He first moved to Lake County in the late 1990s after being assigned by the federal government to coordinate a counter drug program, which tore down drug houses in North Lake County.

He intended to return to his native Anderson, Ind., to become a police officer, but he was persuaded by Sheriff John Buncich to instead work for the sheriff’s department.

The intelligence unit is part of a shift toward intelligence-led policing that uses data to curb crime.

Law enforcement community rallies around C.P. family

CROWN POINT | At 13 months, the parents of Emberly Brazil knew something wasn’t right.

Her mother, Rachel Brazil, said her daughter was having seizures at night, was only saying a few words and stopped connecting emotionally with the family.

“For a few months, it was as if she wasn’t even here,” she said.

This past May, Emberly, who is now 30 months old, was diagnosed with Rett syndrome.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the neurodevelopmenal disorder effects the use of hands, head growth and causes problems walking. There is no cure for the syndrome, which affects one in every 10,000 to 15,000 girls.

After learning about the girl’s diagnosis, the Untouchables Motorcycle Club decided to give the proceeds from its annual Rumble in the Jungle to the Brazil family. The event is taking place Saturday at the group’s clubhouse at 275 E. 71st Ave., in Merrillville.

Todd Cliborne, the club’s co-founder and president, said the event will include a poker motorcycle run starting at 1 p.m. at the Safe House Bar and Grill in Crown Point, where participants will go to five locations to pick up a card. The person with the best poker hand will win a prize.

The event will continue at its clubhouse, where food and entertainment will be provided. The cost for a single rider is $10, $15 for a double rider and $5 for entrance to the clubhouse.

The club, which is mostly made up of officers and retired law enforcement officials, has already secured $5,000 for the Brazil family from Telmate’s fallen heroes fund, said JoAnn De Jesus, the marketing communications manager for the company. Telmate is the company that facilitates video, phone and text for inmates housed at the Lake County Jail.

Michael Brazil, a patrolman for the Crown Point police department, said the club reached out to his family about having the fundraiser within weeks of the diagnosis.

“Out of nowhere they have really embraced Emberly,” he said. “They’ve just been very supportive along with the community.”

He said his family has tried to maintain a normal life for their two young girls while also trying to treat Emberly’s symptoms.

During an afternoon this week, Emberly wore arm braces to make her feel more comfortable as she played with a toy bus and ate Goldfish crackers. Meanwhile, her 5-year-old sister, Adelyn, played with her Barbies on the kitchen table.

They’ve modified a bicycle so she can go on family rides and play with the neighborhood children. Michael Brazil said Adelyn also had to adjust to the realization that she doesn’t have the type of playmate she thought she would have when she got a little sister.

The syndrome causes Emberly to put her hands in her mouth often and requires she have a high-calorie diet. He said there’s also a high probability she won’t be able to talk or walk.

“We are trying to learn what her mannerisms mean,” he said. “You can tell she’s trying to tell you something. It’s figuring out what it is.”

Instead of verbalizing what she wants, Michael Brazil said the girl uses her eyes. The couple joked they know when their daughter is angry at them in the mornings by the look in her eyes.

Rachel Brazil, a teacher in Merrillville, said something like a child’s drawing on a refrigerator are daily reminders of things Emberly might not accomplish.

Still, the family remains hopeful of what Emberly can accomplish as she continues to grow.

One of the items they want to buy for Emberly is a Tobii Eye Gaze, which is a device that uses eye-tracking technology to speak for someone. They also plan to purchase a walker, and intend to use the rest of the money raised Saturday to pay medical expenses.

The family also said they want Saturday’s fundraiser to spread awareness about Rett syndrome.

“I knew about Rett, but we didn’t know about the in and outs,” Michael Brazil said. “People don’t really know the details of Rett syndrome.”

Scratching the Surface (Corrections Forums)

Screen Shot 2015-08-11 at 1.55.59 PM By Donna Rogers, editor-in-chief

Like Skype and FaceTime, video calls continue to go mainstream globally. Benefits in saving inmate transport costs and reducing contraband lead the reasons more agencies employ video every year.

There are some drawbacks, however, including the premise that in-person visits can be more meaningful to the inmate and family. In fact, many counties are starting to eliminate in-person visits and building new jails with no space for them.

This is not always desirable and it is being reversed in some instances. This past May, the Texas Senate passed and sent to Gov. Greg Abbott a bill that requires county jail inmates be allowed a minimum of two in-person non-contact visitation periods per week, reported a May 25 news story on KTXS/abc news with contribution from the Associated Press. (The bill exempts21 Texas counties that have built new jails or are already planning buildings that don’t include visitation space.) Advocates say it’s important to allow inmates to be able to visit family in person while incarcerated. And they complain that one company that supplies video equipment requires counties to eliminate in-person contact as part of the contract.

That company, the communications giant, Securus, has had  three separate lawsuits filed against it since mid-2014, directly pertaining to its practice of requiring jails to eliminate in-person visits in favor of video visits. That complaint was in fact recently reversed. In a statement published May 6 by International Business Time, Securus chief executive Richard Smith said the company has amended its contract language so that it will no longer obligate jails to remove “person-to-person contact” in favor of its video technology.

Lafayette Jail Announces Adoption of Telmate Guardian, Smartphone-based GPS Monitoring for Community Corrections (PRWeb)

Rob Reardon, Director of Corrections at Lafayette said, “The adoption of Telmate Guardian will give Lafayette the opportunity to have a low-cost alternative to supervise low risk offenders while getting more data about their whereabouts and behaviors.” Reardon oversees jail operations and programs like the Sheriff’s Tracking Offender Program (STOP), which is a pre-trial program. He noted that Lafayette prides itself in exploring challenging ways to provide the most innovative services for the community. “Guardian seems to be the right fit to take this pre-trial program to the next level,” Reardon said.

The free Telmate Guardian app is compatible with both Android and Apple smartphones, and requires no new hardware or equipment for case managers and enrollees, making it a low cost, robust and easy to use monitoring solution. Guardian offers case managers real-time supervision, easy to read reports, and check-in controls, along with features like photos, voiceprints, and location compliance zones that make it simple to actively pinpoint and supervise enrollees.

Case managers simply set up a new user online and provide a unique PIN to the enrollee; the enrollee then downloads the app and signs up. Based on their program, enrollees are prompted to check in by reading a random series of numbers. Voice and facial detection confirm the check-in as successful. All check-ins are reported and delivered to the case manager, which adds unprecedented human insight for case managers, who can determine not only where enrollees are, but how they are. Additionally, case managers can easily increase supervision coverage as a result of Telmate Guardian.

“Telmate Guardian is a win/win for community corrections in Lafayette,” said Telmate Chief Marketing Officer, Jeff Hansen. “Case managers get a simple, powerful way to add a layer of effective monitoring, and enrollees get a modern, familiar and dignified solution that supports them getting out and staying out.”

Lafayette trying new smartphone app to track offenders (The Advocate)

A new smartphone-based app will make cumbersome ankle bracelets a relic for some Lafayette Parish offenders sentenced to a GPS tracking program.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office this week announced its adoption of Telmate Guardian, an app compatible with Android and Apple phones that uses their cameras, microphones and GPS features to monitor where users are at any point in time.

“It’s another alternative for low-risk, low-need individuals but still provides a level of supervision that allows them to be out in the community,” Corrections Director Rob Reardon said on Wednesday.

Those using the app will be prompted at random points throughout the day to read a computer-generated sequence of numbers or letters while looking into the phone’s self-facing camera as a string of photos are captured. The app is calibrated to recognize the user’s face and his or her voice patterns, and it pings cellphone towers throughout the day to alert monitors of the phone’s location.

“If there’s some sort of problem — say it appears he or she is slurring their words — that will come up in the system, too,” Reardon said.

Case managers also may use the app to schedule appointments with the offender. Some nonviolent, generally misdemeanor offenders will be eligible to use it, including those in the pretrial program.

Two people began using Telmate Guardian this month. It costs a flat rate of $2 a day per person, but the Sheriff’s Office doubled that to $4 to cover administrative costs associated with the tracking program.

“It’s still cheaper than the bracelet,” Reardon said, noting those without smartphones will still be using ankle bracelets that cost $7 a day.

Telmate, the San Francisco-based company behind the app, already sells phone and digital visitation services to inmates at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, where physical visits are prohibited. It also provides deposit services for inmates’ commissary accounts.

SEPTEMBER HERO: SERGEANT GARY GRUNEWALD

Ada County Hero Keeps Community Safe by Continually Leveraging Technology

SEPTEMBER 21, 2015 -BOISE, ID – Telmate’s Hero of the Month, Sergeant Gary Grunewald, is an always-innovating tech pioneer at the Ada County Jail, where he regularly makes sure the facility not only gets value and benefit out of technology, but uses it effectively for the safety of his community.

Never let it be said that technologically savvy Grunewald, who is currently Ada’s Jail Security Projects Coordinator, doesn’t have plans and visions for the future. Always full of ideas, the Jail Security Projects Coordinator and 21-year corrections veteran is currently assigned to two major projects at the jail, which include overseeing a revamp of their JMS and security control system.

Sergeant Grunewald readily admits he’s the one to deal with the technological side of the jail that includes Telmate, more than anyone else, both because he’s devoted to the jail and he’s one of the facility staff that’s been there the longest. “I love the challenge of the people part of my job and I have a really good understanding of every type of position, so I know the whole overall function of the jail and all the parts we need to worry about.” He said his strong tech aptitude and proclivity for processes comes from being in the Navy for six years as a nuclear mechanic and instructor.

A Telmate customer for almost five years, Ada County has Telmate phones, kiosks and tablets. Grunewald is always looking for innovative ways for Ada County to use Telmate technology, such as taking inmate surveys, uploading handbooks and turning on inmate request forms on Telmate stations and Telmate Tablets. “The inmate request part greatly reduces the amount of manpower, from the request until someone can see it and deal with it. Now we just go to a computer and respond back to the inmate within a couple of hours instead of a couple of days,” he said.

They’ve also had positive success adding tablets, which have been deployed in Ada’s medium and minimum housing areas. Grunewald said usage has been growing steadily and seems to be a good tool for giving the inmates something positive to do. “I think it gives inmates a chance to mentally disengage and keep the stress down even though they are in dorms of 92 people.”

According to Grunewald, Telmate technology also helps Ada County Jail accomplish the Sheriff’s office mission, which is to keep constituents safe and create a good place to live. Telmate’s investigator tools help facilitate work with outside agencies where there are prosecutors and detectives gathering information on crimes to help them win convictions. “If we can take those people off the streets, we’ll make our communities safer.”

Every month, Telmate receives nominations in recognition of heroes just like Grunewald, who use the company’s technology, day in and day out. Telmate recognizes these heroes by selecting and honoring one Hero of the Month for their dedication and leadership.

The Telmate Guardian app is compatible with both Android and Apple smartphones, and requires no new hardware or equipment for case managers and enrollees, keeping it within the department’s budget. Speaking with New Orleans-based newspaper The Advocate, Reardon said that two supervisees began using the Guardian app earlier this month. While the program generally costs $2 per day per user, the sheriff’s office upped the price to $4 to account for administrative and other program expenses. Reardon noted that it still makes for a much cheaper alternative than standard ankle bracelets, which generally run those under supervision $7 per day.

Jeff Hansen, Telmate’s chief marketing officer, describe the app as “a win/win for community corrections in Lafayette” in a statement. “Case managers get a simple, powerful way to add a layer of effective monitoring, and enrollees get a modern, familiar and dignified solution that supports them getting out and staying out,” he added.

Telmate already provides digital and phone-based visitation programs to the parish’s correctional center as well as a commissary account services.

Telmate Cares Supports Local Hygiene Supplies Project

DSCF1500-2Cheryl Farley needed to get her mind off the pain after spinal surgery. So the caring, local nurse from Saint Alphonsus Medical Center, in Ontario, Oregon, started a project to help those in need. She put together one-gallon zip-lock bags with assorted hygiene supplies labeled: “Help change the life of a friend.”

The successful hygiene supply drive grew, and her living room is now home to more than 100 packets she hopes to distribute through local ambulance services and organizations like Harvest House. “The smallest thing can be huge to someone who doesn’t have anything,” said Farley.

Back in June, Farley did a couple of bake sales to promote her good hygiene initiative. As part of its Telmate Cares community outreach initiative, Telmate participated by holding fundraisers, then buying the supplies and filling up the packets.  From toothbrushes to toothpaste, and deodorant to razors, these packets contain essential assundries that not only give the needy the basics, but a sense of dignity.

BARDSTOWN, KY – SEPTEMBER 24, 2015 – On September 24, Telmate representatives and the Bardstown Police Department gathered in memory of local slain Police Officer Jason Ellis. As part of the company’s program called “Telmate Fallen Heroes,” Telmate donated an undisclosed amount to the Jason Ellis Memorial Fund.

“The entire city of Bardstown continues to mourn the loss of Officer Ellis,” said Police Chief Rick McCubbin. “His memory will never be forgotten.” Bardstown Police K9 Officer Jason Ellis was shot and killed in the line of duty, which happened in the early morning hours of May 25, 2013. He was ambushed when he stopped on his way home from work to clear debris from the road on the Bluegrass Parkway outside the city limits in Nelson County.

Officer Jason Ellis’ widow, Amy Ellis, was in attendance for the presentation.  Amy Ellis said “our family has been overwhelmed with the support the community has given and we are extremely grateful for the thoughtfulness and generosity of Telmate.”

The Telmate Fallen Heroes program is part of the company’s community outreach program called Telmate Cares. Every month, nominees are presented to a committee and one individual or organization is selected for the scholarship to support fallen officers or families of law enforcement officers in need.

“We have the privilege of working with corrections and law enforcement agencies and personnel on a day to day basis,” said Telmate Chief Marketing Officer, Jeff Hansen, “and we are so honored to do what we can to support law enforcement agencies and their families.  We recognize the sacrifice Officer Ellis made to protect his community and we are honored to make this award to support his family”

Through the Telmate Fallen Heroes fund, Telmate donated an undisclosed scholarship amount to the Jason Ellis Memorial Fund designed to support Ellis’ surviving family.

Calling it “The Future of Community Corrections,” Reentry Central received the following information from Telmate Guardian to share with our readers:

“The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office today announced their adoption of Telmate Guardian, a technically advanced, low-cost, smartphone-based, GPS monitoring solution for low-risk populations in community corrections. Community correction includes pre-trial, work-release, probation and parole. Telmate Guardian provides a secure and easy way to monitor more individuals and maintain tighter control, all while utilizing a smartphone – a piece of hardware everyone owns.
